MR. STEVE GUGLER

Steve is a well-seasoned and experienced insurance industry veteran, with deep, cross-functional exposure to many facets of the P&C Industry in Canada. This includes vast expertise in regulatory and statistical reporting and analysis, insurance data standards and broker connectivity, and insurance carrier technology roadmaps.  Driven by a true passion for changing, improving and innovating in the insurance space, he has led the successful implementation of numerous technology solutions for Canadian insurance carriers, including telematics / UBI platforms, broker connectivity solutions, regulatory reporting solutions, large-scale data conversions and automated underwriting portals.

In addition to delivering technology solutions, Steve has led numerous Ontario and National industry-wide initiatives.  Working with numerous carriers, brokers and technology vendors, these initiatives included the establishment of industry roadmaps for carrier-broker connectivity and enabling optimal customer service within the broker channel.
 
With a close connection to the broker community and understanding of what brokers need in this digital age to effectively service their wide range of customers, along with 20 years of technology solution experience in the Canadian insurance space, Steve brings a unique skill set to the Nova Mutual Board.
 
Steve has an Honours BBA degree from Wilfrid Laurier University and was one of the first in Canada to earn the ACORD Certified Expert (ACE) designation for knowledge and application of insurance data standards.  Additionally, Steve is an active member of the community, volunteering for the past 11 years as a youth soccer and hockey coach.

Quindell Solutions 2014-2015

Vice President, Solutions Assurance (Product)

Responsible for the development and delivery of products for a multinational, multibillion-dollar organization, including a Product suite encompassing insurance and financial services.

  • Established a new division within the Canadian arm of the enterprise, tasked with the development of new, innovative technology products for delivery within the Canadian P&C Insurance market
  • Recruited and managed a team to build one of the first full-functioning telematics platforms for use within the Usage Based Insurance (UBI) space, and successfully delivered the platform into production
  • Successfully delivered product innovation enhancements to the enterprise Product suite including telematics, automated underwriting portals, and regulatory reporting, liaising with other global divisions as required to leverage components where possible

Responsible for the $5M+ project portfolio within the Professional Services division, including all aspects of delivering client projects and post-production support, as well as providing pre-sales support for key accounts

  • Managed a staff of over 25 personnel, responsible for the delivery of all client projects across the enterprise
  • Performed key account management responsibilities, acting in a project sponsor capacity and playing a key role in maintaining effective client relationships and satisfaction with project delivery

Responsible for the management of iter8 Business Consultants, the client project assignment and utilization of all Business and Technical Consultants, and acted as the implementation lead on key client projects.

  • Managed a staff of 5 Business Consultants, including responsibility for all aspects of recruitment and hiring, training and personnel evaluation
  • Mentored Business Consultants, facilitating training and knowledge transfer of specialized industry expertise including Canadian regulatory reporting, broker connectivity and standards implementation, and data conversion strategy and execution

Responsible for executing tasks at every step of client implementations including project planning, requirements gathering and analysis, development, unit and system testing, implementation, system documentation and training.

  • Participated in, and lead, the end-to-end development and implementation of 4 regulatory reporting solutions including IBC, FA RSP, and GAA PSA, FCSA and PRR reporting.
  • Performed in a key capacity in the end-to-end development and implementation of 7 CSIO EDI/XML upload/download systems, handling very high volumes of data in near real-time
  • Participated in a key role in the end-to-end development and implementation of an IBC statistical reporting system that reduced the insurer’s error rate by 74% and met the cost-benefit objective in 6 months
  • Managed a portfolio conversion project, where my team developed, tested and implemented a system that converted over 1 million policies throughout a 1-year period
  • Developed numerous training plans for both business and technical audiences and delivered training sessions to groups numbering from 2 to 12 people

Responsible for identifying insurance companies with data submission deficiencies, developing and presenting recommended solutions and working closely with companies to implement such project plans.

  • Analysed insurer statistical submission performance and developed action plans to assist problem companies to improve data accuracy and completeness
  • Contributed in many capacities on various projects, with responsibilities including industry communication, creating data quality measurement tools (CEO Report Card) and providing business requirements for the development of various internal applications and reports
  • Developed strong relationships with key individuals at numerous companies, necessary to gaining the desired commitment to change
